White like me is documentary on white privilege on showing our racist past. White privilege is the privilege that in society that whites are looked upon has a higher status than others. This can be not being racially profiled by cops or getting loans from banks that minorities can not get. The documentary states that white people are blind to their privilege since they do not know what it like to be black. I do not know how I feel about this since you can shutdown arguments just by saying your black you would not understand or since I am white you can not understand me. But there is clear white privilege in our past this is not a argument but a fact. Blacks could not vote, they were segregated into inferior fatalities, and they were Jim Crow laws. Black were oppressed for a long time in americas history . They tell how Obama was elected and how people that made the argument that racism is not prevalent in the United States anymore are completely wrong. For me I agree that racism still exists in the United States but it is no where close to how bad it was in the past.
For me when I was being raised by my parents I was always taught to ignore race. So when Obama got elected I noticed a lot of people wanted to vote for him not because his ideas just because he is black. For me I never thought we needed black presidnet to be elected to break that glass ceiling, I always thought it was broken since I have never seen racism before. Same thing for a woman has president I have never seen the need to have a woman has president just because they're a woman. Skin color or sex does not matter to me, I would rather have black lesbians on the Supreme Court that reflect my political stance rather than a white christian male that do not. For me it is about ideas not skin color or sex. But obviously there are people that did not want Obama has president for the sheer fact he is black. But also if you look across the aisle they are people that voted for Obama cause of his skin color.
But how prevalent is racism and white privilege today. I am not sure at all, for me I do not see racism often or my white privilege. But I also very opened mined and with some evidence I am more than happy to fight white privilege. But it also concerns me a lot how many blacks say that they are being discriminated and oppressed. I often think maybe we are living through history and blacks are being still oppressed. Maybe when I look back sixty years I will see how racist 2019 is and think what is wrong with me for not seeing it. For me I need evidence or seeing it happen. I really want to see my "white privilege" but I do not see it at all.
